Topic:
Over the past few decades, there have been dramatic improvements in the status and treatment of women in U.S. Foreign Service. Ms. Joanne Gilles, an Economic Officer with the U.S. Department of State who is currently serving as Deputy Director of the Tokyo American Center, will provide an overview of this historical transition and illustrate the challenges and prospects in being a female Foreign Service Officer. Ms. Gilles will share with us her professional experiences in posts including Nigeria, Germany, Taiwan and Japan in hopes of encouraging women who might be interested in embarking upon a career in international affairs, as well as others facing similar challenges in their own fields. She will also profile some outstanding women in the State Department who can serve as wonderful role models for all of us.
