Global mass poverty is a major economic problem for the world, yet it attracts relatively little attention in rich countries. Dr. Peter McCawley, Dean of the Asian Development Bank Institute in Tokyo, will discuss the inadequate response to the issue, including the impact of poverty on women in the developing world.
Peter will talk about whether foreign aid is the only way to alleviate mass poverty, and how to promote strong and sustainable growth. He will also address the difficult tasks facing poor countries amid globalization, structural change and environmental destruction.
A PHD graduate in economics from the Australian National University, Peter has taught at a number of universities including Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta and The University of Queensland. After serving as Deputy Director General at AusAID, Australia’s government aid agency, he took up a position as an Executive Director at the Asian Development Bank in Manila.
Fluent in Bahasa Indonesia, Peter enjoys walking, music, books, and Japan.
