Topic: The Maverick Among Us – An Insider’s View into Tokyo’s Entertainment Industry

Tokyo attracts many colorful characters – some eventually move on, others stay. Longtime Tokyoite, Rick Roa, chose to put down roots in the Big Mikan and seek opportunity in a wide variety of fields, including the fast-moving entertainment industry. Rick gives his personnel insight into the industry and the modern history behind Roppongi, Ginza and Shibuya as seen over the last three decades.
Well-known in the Japanese and foreign business community, Rick was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He first traveled overseas with the U.S. Army to Korea before joining an electrical company in the Bahamas, Germany and the Philippines. Since coming to Japan in 1968, Rick has showed true entrepreneurial spirit by taking on projects such as the American Music Awards Concert in Tokyo and “The Great American Train” – a train that traveled throughout Japan marketing American products in the 80’s.
Fresh of the press, Rick’s autobiography, “American Maverick in Japan,” written by Tony Teora, dives into some of his anecdotes including those involving celebrities such as Whitney Houston and Dewi Sukarno.
As a special offer to FEW, Rick will be selling his book at the July meeting for the special price of only 2000 yen and will be available to sign copies.
